Episode 11: Twister, DBT and Guest Colleen Andrews

Licensed professional counselors Johanna Dwinells and Sarah Bryski-Hamrick are slowly demystifying and destigmatizing therapy, one episode at a time. Recording and living in the Philadelphia area, Johanna and Sarah work to make therapy feel more accessible, with quirky, sometimes intrusive questions that reveal the human side of healthcare professionals, all while they overcome their own anxieties and internalized stigmas.

TW: Mention of self-harm, suicide attempts, death and there are some NSFW words towards the end

Episode summary: Happy Episode 11! Johanna dreams about the fall. Sarah talks about her composting efforts. They both discuss tornados and the movie Twister before reading about the history of DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy). Colleen Andrews, Licensed Professional Counselor geeks out about DBT and discusses working with adolescents in a higher level of care.

Guest Bio: Colleen Andrews, LPC, grew up in NJ attended Fordham university for undergrad, double majored in psychology and sociology, followed by grad school at Rider for Clinical mental health counseling. She was fortunate enough to get a job with Princeton House Behavioral Health, where she did her internships in grad school and worked there for several years while completing supervision for full licensure. She did adolescent DBT PHP/IOP programs and on occasion, worked in the women's program. She absolutely loves working with teenagers in higher levels of care, DBT is her favorite treatment modality and she dreams of being Marsha Linehan someday. After completing her full license and going through a bad personal break up, she decided to move to Philadelphia where she took a job at Belmont Behavioral in their child/adolescent PHP. Outside of career information, she considers herself to be a very basic human. She likes spending time with family and friends, binge watching true crime shows and petting any dog whose owner will allow it. She likes to cook, being outdoors, and during the pandemic, committed to the life of plant mom.
